Guidance for Some of the Toughest (and Most
Important) Conversations You’ll Have with Your
Child
If you’re
like most parents, you get a little queasy
thinking about telling your child about
where babies come from, teaching them about
the birds and the bees, or helping him/her
understand hormonal changes. You wonder if
you’ll say the right thing or give
age-appropriate information. It’s such a
sensitive subject, yet you want your child
to hear the information from you.
Many parents put off these conversations as
long as possible feeling ill-equipped on how
best to talk with their children at
different stages. Naming body parts,
teaching about reproduction and educating
your child about his/her changing body can
feel intimidating.
Yet, media images are rampant with
inappropriate sexual content. Your child is
receiving thousands of provocative messages
via personal computers, commercials, TV
shows, video games, music lyrics and videos
that encourage him/her to partake in sexual
activity without regard to developmental
appropriateness, safety, or your values.
It’s essential that your own message be
heard among the cacophony of inappropriate
content so your child learns accurate
information from you that conforms to your
values. You are your child’s first teacher
whether or not you are discussing this
subject at home. You can learn ways to be
your child’s on-going confidante,
counteracting society’s messages in “The Birds and the Bees from
Preschool to Puberty” audio recording.
